Whether you've been painting your walls and accidentally streaked your ceiling, or you've been painting your ceiling and find it looks streaked instead of smooth, there's no quick fix for painting errors.

You can't remove your mistakes; you're going to have to paint over them. Luckily, while it takes a little time, it's a pretty easy process.

If you don't have any paint that is the same color as your ceiling, you'll have to buy new paint. In fact, even if you have some of the original paint you used, the ceiling may have faded to another color, and you will have to match that.

If possible, bring a paint chip to the home improvement or hardware store when you buy your paint so you can match it precisely. If the streaks are very close in color to your ceiling color, you may be able to get away without using primer.

In most cases, however, you will need to cover the streaks with primer to cover the new color before you paint the matching color. Move your furniture to the center of the room and cover it with a drop cloth.

Place plastic tarps over the floor. Set up the ladder. Put painter's tape along the edge of the walls. Again, make sure the paint on the wall is perfectly dry before you do this. Climb up the ladder with an open can of primer. Brush a layer of primer over the streaks on the ceiling. Depending on the size of the streaks, you may be able to get away with just a few strokes to cover your error. The primer should cover the paint completely without bleeding through.

Wait for the primer to dry completely. Then brush a layer of matching colored paint over the primer. Try to make strokes at different angles so it covers without making obvious lines. Wait for the paint to dry completely.

If the color you used to paint over the streaks stands out too much from your original paint color, you may have to repaint the entire ceiling. Gather the painting supplies. Take a roller with extension, dip it lightly in paint, and roll it back and forth on the ribbed paint tray, removing as much excess paint as possible.

Go up your ladder, and roll the paint onto the ceiling at an angled stroke up to the left and back. Then, at an angle, stroke up to the right and back, all against the original angle of the stroke. The criss-crossed strokes should cover the streaks. You can find out how to fix paint streaks on walls, all 3 of them.

This looks like where the edges of the roller are leaving little raised lines of paint behind as you roll, almost like boundary lines.

Sanding too hard can take off the flat paint, which would mean another coat application. Sometimes the paint on the roller starts disappearing faster than we realize. Less paint means a lighter coat, resulting in uneven paint streaks on your walls.

All you need to do is wait for it to completely dry and then apply another coat of paint. Sand off the raised parts and touch them up as necessary. We have a brand new house, and it has special paint in the bathroom that was recommended by the paint supplier.

how to fix paint streaks on walls

Before we even used our bathroom, our relatives put their kids in the bath and steamed up the whole room by not using the ventilation available. The steam has run down the walls and seems to have stained them. How can I remove these stains? Marks left by water running down the walls can be extremely difficult to remove. In fact, you may find that repainting with a semi-gloss, gloss or bathroom paint may be the only way to completely fix this problem. Before you take that step, however, give this one a try.

I just used half water plus half vinegar. Cleaned my bathroom walls.

Steam marks came right off and the bathroom smells fresh. Vinegar, borax, etc. What you have to do is use an oil-based primer and then paint!! I tried everything and was finally told this at a paint store and it worked! I was ready to pound out the wall after washing, and four coats of paint!!! Does anyone know which Awesome product they are referring to?

There are several cleaners and dish detergents to choose from. This past winter, the temperatures dipped to degrees, which created a lot of condensation on my walls and ceilings. I found several recommendations for cleaning solutions that all involved copious amounts of bleach.

Glad I found this; it worked well for me. Most commercial paint stores and some big box stores carry wall cleaners that professionals use to prep prior to painting. You might be able to rinse afterwards and not paint, but I have never tried this.

In addition, you can also find several paint primers that are specifically for walls with stains. Finally, a neat trick that a friend who paints professionally turned me on to is to use a water-based matte finish polyurethane to cover over impossible stains like graffiti on concrete or stucco prior to painting with water-based exterior paint or alternatively oil-based polyurethane for oil-based exterior paint.

I imagine the polyurethane trick may also work on interiors, but I have never tried it. I agree with a previous post. The amount of Borax needs to be reduced or increase your water. There is a LOT of soapy residue left to rinse off.

When walls look uneven, however, with streaks, splotches, lines or inconsistent color, you need to know more about surface preparation, painting materials and application techniques to salvage your project.

Taking time to learn some of the knowledge and methods used by professional painters will help you get professional-quality results.

Nearly all paints are designed to work best on specific surfaces, so defining your surface is critical to success. Exterior and interior paints are formulated to address different light, temperature and wear issues, so using up paint from an exterior job for an interior one, or vice versa, will yield poor results.

For previously painted drywall or plaster walls, you could choose almost any latex or alkyd paint you like to produce a smooth, creamy, even surface.

In some states, environmental regulations require interior paints to meet low-volatile-organic-compound low-VOC standards to protect consumers. For exterior surfaces, choices widen to include both latex and oil-based paints for walls and trims, along with special formulations for metal and masonry surfaces.

Many poor paint jobs originate with the wrong paint choice. Experienced painters will tell you that applying paint is only a small fraction of the work needed to paint a surface.

For an even job, the wall surface needs to be free of anything that can prevent paint from adhering or discolor it once applied. Spackling nail-heads, for example, prevents rust stain from leaching through paint. Spackled areas will, however, absorb paint differently from the surrounding wall area. Walls in kitchens or bathrooms may need treatment with a degreaser to absorb paint evenly.

How to Fix Paint Roller Marks After Drying? 5 Tips for Beginners

The best way to assure even paint absorption is to prime walls before the final painting. Primer paints create a dense, cohesive surface, hiding irregularities like color streaks in previously unpainted wood.

The deep or intense tones of previous paint jobs and other surface issues that can contribute substantially to poor final results. Rollers and brushes, like paints, are designed for specific jobs. Lamb's-wool rollers are the best choice for applying oil-based paints, while synthetic rollers work better with latex, alkyd and other water-based paints. Choose foam rollers for oil or high-gloss water-based latex paints.

Choosing the right depth of roller nap also affects results. In general, the rougher the surface you are painting, the deeper the nap you need.

Natural bristle brushes have multiple fine hairs that create a smooth paint surface. Reserve less expensive polyester and foam brushes for smaller-scale paint jobs. Especially if you are making a drastic change in wall color, from dark to light or vice versa, increase the effectiveness of your primer with tinting.

This adds depth and evenness to your new color more effectively than applying an extra coat of finish paint. Adding a commercial conditioner or extender to your paint can help reduce streaking where newly painted areas overlap with already-dry ones, by slowing paint drying time and increasing viscosity.

Pros also suggest that finishing one wall before moving to the next will reduce overlap streaking. Resist the temptation to do your cutting-in and edging for the whole room and complete painting one wall at a time.

Another source of unevenness can be minor variations in color from one can of paint to the next.We respect your privacy. All email addresses you provide will be used just for sending this story. Consumer Reports' paint pro offers foolproof ways to prevent goofs and make flawless fixes. The goof. Blame this painting mistake on the lighting, fatigue, distraction, or spreading the paint too thin. The fix.

Good thing you kept the leftover paint in a tightly sealed container, or course. After the paint dries—usually about 4 hours—touch up the missed spots with a brush. As for spreading the paint too thin, a roller dipped in paint should cover a 2-byfoot section of the wall. See the video below for how to ace it. Once the paint dries, use fine sandpaper to remove the run, then retouch the area with a brush and a little paint, feathering the edges. A cheap roller with obvious seams could be the problem, and the paint makes a difference too.

Use longer-nap roller covers for textured walls, or walls that have a very uneven surface from patching, for example. Rollers with steel frames and lots of tines are sturdier and stiffer than ones with just caps on the ends, and those sealed ends keep the paint on the roller cover.

Before using a new roller cover, use a piece of painter's tape to remove loose lint. As for the paint, be sure to check out the smoothness scores in our interior paint ratings. They indicate whether marks from roller, brushes, or runs are obvious once the paint dries. Yes, it takes time, but it's worth it. Additionally, consider investing in the highest quality paint you can afford as some inexpensive paints are prone to drying in a streaky finish because of their ingredients.

Repair any holes or gouges by filling the holes with spackling putty. A small amount placed on the tip of a putty knife will fill most nail holes or gouges. Once the hole is filled, use the flat edge of the putty knife to scrape away excess putty so it dries flush with the wall. Any dried bumps or smears will make paint appear more pronounced. Open the paint can with the opener supplied by the paint store. If you need to replace the lid to protect unused paint for another day, the lid should close tightly to keep air and organisms out so it will match any previously applied paint.

The right opener won't bend the lid and prevent it from sealing properly. Stir the paint for about 60 seconds with the stir stick.

How to Fix Paint Streaks on a Ceiling

Although your paint was mixed at the store, some of the blended pigments might have separated, which causes streaks in the finished look. Cut in all the wall borders at the ceiling, floor and corners with an angled brush. Hold your hand steady and pull the brush along the wall so it fans with the upper tip of the angle creating a straight edge. Rinse the paint from your brush when the wall borders are painted and hang the brush to dry from a peg or hook so excess water will drip from the brush.

Roll the roller cover in the paint pan until it is saturated.

Roll out the excess paint on the raised portion of the pan until the cover doesn't drip when it is lifted. The cover, though, must remain evenly saturated on all sides so no uneven strokes are left behind.

An even hand repeats this pattern until the wall is one solid swath of color. Allow the paint to dry overnight before rolling on a second coat of paint. Two coats should always be your mantra as one coat is rarely enough to complete the look and is often the culprit for a streaky finish. Stir the paint every 20 to 30 minutes to blend any floating pigments that have settled since the previous stir.I've read lots of articles in this forum about what the issues are that cause paint streaks.

I have yet to find a message that says how to fix this issue.

Evidently we painted too quickly over the paint and there are this horrible paint streaks on the wall. We tried to paint 24 hours later to fix the streaks, but it didn't do any good.

The streaks are still there. Two questions: what was the color blue? What was the color over which you were painting? These are factors which affect streaks of coloration, i. Further, acrylic paints can take up to a month to fully cure. All acrylic products have a whiteish look in their liquid form which disappears when thoroughly dried.

If you have ever used a clear acrylic caulk, you might have noticed it came out white and changed to clear over as much as a month's time. Similarly, when a can of acrylic "deep base" paint is opened it appears white, even though it has absolutely no colorant and no white in it! That whitish look affects the paint until completely dried and cured. You don't state how long it has been to date. If it has not been at least several days, I would plead patience.

If so, it may well be that you had a damaged roller that is repeating a pattern as it rolls up the wall. Second possiblility: Many roller pans have reinforcing patterns in the bottom of them. If too little paint is used, or the area not re-rolled a couple times, this pattern can be transferred to the wall. It is for this reason I never use a roller pan when doing faux techniques, as the ridge pattern gets transferred to the rag or sponge doing the faux application and subsequently gets transferred to the wall.

Obviously, I have not seen your walls, so I am shooting somewhat blind. I will only state that two common mistakes by amateur painters is applying too little, or too much paint, and then not rollling it adequately. One fill up of the roller should only cover about one roller width from top to bottom of the wall.

The roller is then re-rolled back over the past roller application, evening out the paint thickness on the wall. Every inch of the wall should have been rolled at least three times in an effort to get a nice uniform thickness of the paint film.

A gallon of paint will cover about square feet of wall space, or about one coat on the walls of a 9X12 foot room with 8 foot ceilings.

There are several factors which can influence coverage. Very dry walls will suck up more paint and probably will result in streaky looking walls! This is why paint manufacturers highly recommend primeing walls first. Primeing decreases paint useage, results in an even sheen and increases the appearance of the color.
